A good reader should not be like a
plundering troop that salvages what he likes from the spoils of war and leaves
other things to rot in the mire of blood and mud. A reader should take
everything from the book that he reads. In being like a savage troop, that
reader does not just disrespects the author who has written the whole book but
the very book itself that loses its entirety, which defiles it.
A good reader should not be in hurry to
finish the book for the sake of finishing it but he should give time to the
thoughts of writer to sink in him and understand him. Nietzsche compares this
hastiness to that of taking a bath in cold water. A person gets in the bath and
quickly comes out without any concern of his cleanliness and hygiene but cares
for getting out of the cold water as soon as possible. We should take time so
that we can have time to contemplate what we have read and develop our own
thoughts and opinions. This is what Nietzsche wants to do- to provoke people
into thinking.
